Guru Amar Das Ji , the third Guru, first started the creation of Harmandir Sahib by making a scared pool of water larger. This pool was known as the 'pool of nectar' from which the name 'Amritsar' is derived from. After Guru Amar Das Ji, his son-in-law, Guru Ram Das Ji went on to build the city of Amritsar around the pool. The Guru's son Guru Arjan Ji then went on to build the Harimandir temple in the middle of the pool. The most unquie thing about the Harmandir Sahib during those days was that, there were four enterances for the North , West, East and South (as temples in those days had one door facing the East ). This was to symbolize that everyone in the whole world from any direction, irrespective of religion or caste is welcome to the temple. Almost everyone who visits the temple takes a dip in the pool of nectar and many people come from all over the world to help clean the pool when required. More infomation to be added soon...... |
